It’s great to learn not only a language but also the history and evolution behind it. However, in Chinese, every character does mean something, then characters can make up words, idioms, phrases, and sentences. There are about 3000-5000 frequently-used characters.

There are about 3000-5000 frequently-used characters in Chinese, I guess it is like the vocabulary in English, and every character has a sound (like a single syllable in English).
