This week the ‘Thinking in English’ Community is practicing the past perfect continuous grammar!

Let’s practice answering questions using the past perfect continuous grammar!

Here are 10 conversation questions to get you using this tense!

Conversation Questions: Past Perfect Continuous

  1. What jobs had you been applying for before you were offered your current role?
  2. How long had you been studying English before you listened to the Thinking in English Podcast?
  3. Had you been practicing speaking English with anyone before joining the conversation club?
  4. Had you been saving for a long time before you finally traveled abroad?
  5. What kind of research had you been doing before you made your travel plans (for your last vacation)?
  6. How long had you been thinking about your future career before you chose your current path?
  7. How long had you been waiting for that technology (whatever you want – games console, phone, car etc) to be available before you could purchase it?
  8. What had you been doing before a major change in your life, like moving to a new city or starting a new job?
  9. Have you ever had a hobby or interest that you had been doing regularly before you decided to stop?
  10. Make your own questions!
Vocabulary
  • Applying – to submit a formal request for a job or position.
  • Offered – to be presented with a job opportunity.
  • Travel abroad – going to another country for a trip or vacation.
  • Research – the act of gathering information to learn more about a topic or make a decision.
  • Career path – the progression or direction in one’s professional life.
  • Technology – modern devices or tools that enhance communication, work, or entertainment.
  • Major change – a significant life event or transformation.
  • Hobby – an activity done regularly for pleasure during one’s leisure time.

The model answers are split into intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced level responses. Hopefully this will give you an idea on the differences in quality between intermediate and advanced responses, and perhaps inspire your own answers to these questions!
