When it comes to language learning, new technology can change our approaches and strategies to studying.
One such innovation I’ve recently discovered is Google NotebookLM. Google NotebookLM is a tool that I think will transform how we study, work, and research. It uses the power of artificial intelligence, with some very interesting features.
Whether you’re a casual learner or diving deep into English grammar, this tool is worth exploring.

What is Google NotebookLM?
Google NotebookLM is an innovative AI study and research tool, akin to having an interactive computer embedded in your notebook.
By adding sources — including website articles, videos, and PDF files — NotebookLM processes these materials to provide summaries and generate additional content. It’s a way to turn passive learning activities, like listening to podcasts, into active study sessions.
Getting Started with NotebookLM
Setting Up Your Notebook
To start using NotebookLM, you can create a new notebook and add various sources. Options include uploading documents such as PDFs and audio files or linking directly to content in Google Drive.
Sources, like episodes from my Thinking in English podcast, can easily be uploaded or submitted to create a comprehensive study experience.
Managing Sources
You can add up to 50 sources within a single notebook.
Once you add a source, NotebookLM quickly summarises the content. I linked copies of my English grammar lesson episodes to NotebookLM, and it was instantly offering insights into grammar lessons and discussions.
This allows learners (people like you) to curate personalised educational resources tailored to their interests and needs.
Interacting with AI for Study
With the chat feature, you can interact with NotebookLM’s AI to ask questions, request summaries, and create translations.
The AI’s ability to generate detailed explanations, examples, and translations makes it a powerful study companion.
Moreover, NotebookLM is specifically focused on the sources you upload (compared to ChatGPT which is often draws from its own “knowledge”).
Creating and Using Study Guides
NotebookLM can generate study guides complete with quizzes, vocabulary lists, and comprehension questions. These guides cater better to comprehension and vocabulary-focused episodes but are a valuable tool for review and reinforcement of learning.
FAQ and Timeline
The FAQ section provides quick answers to common questions, while the timeline function helps organise materials chronologically, which is useful when dealing with multiple documents or multimedia sources.
Mind Maps and Podcasts
NotebookLM is really good at transforming complex information into accessible formats, such as mind maps that lay out topics in an interactive visual format.
Additionally, NotebookLM can automatically generate podcast episodes from the source material, offering a dynamic way to engage with the content.
Interactive Podcast Experience
A standout feature is the interactive mode of AI-generated podcasts. You can pause episodes to ask questions, request clarifications, and explore topics more deeply.
This interactive element not only reinforces learning but makes studying more engaging and personalised.
Conclusion
Whether used for language learning, studying grammar, or exploring new subjects, NotebookLM opens up endless possibilities. As it stands free to use, now is the perfect time to explore this revolutionary tool.
Share your experiences, and let’s discover how Google NotebookLM can best serve your learning needs.
