Football is often described as a game that brings people together… but is it always?
In July 1969, a conflict broke out between El Salvador and Honduras. It is commonly known as the Football War, the Soccer War, or the 100-Hour War, because the fighting followed a series of heated World Cup qualifying matches between the two nations.
The reality is more complicated. Football did not create the conflict, but the matches did ignite some growing political, economic, and social tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
So, what really happened? Why were Honduras and El Salvador already on the brink of conflict? How did three football matches become international incidents?
