Autumn is arriving soon, and Septemberโs Thinking in English Conversation Clubs are the perfect place for you to share opinions, tell stories, discuss culture, and develop real-world speaking confidence.
This month, weโll talk about exams and testing, cinema, espionage, and mindset. This is a mixture of topics (all related to recent Thinking in English episodes) that encourage natural conversation and meaningful discussion.
As always, every Conversation Club session is designed to help you feel prepared and confident, with:
- Carefully prepared discussion questions
- A focused vocabulary list
- Example answers at different levels
- Small-group speaking practice
- Support from trained tutors (and me!)
Hereโs whatโs coming up in September 2026.
September Conversation Club Topics
Each week, we focus on a different theme designed to encourage natural conversation, opinion sharing, and real-life English use. As always, Iโll prepare discussion questions, useful vocabulary, and example answers before each session.

Week 1: Exams & Tests
Tuesday & Thursday: September 1 & 3
We begin September with a discussion about testing and education.
Weโll discuss:
- Your experiences with language tests (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, etc.)
- Are exams a good measure of true intelligence or ability?
- Test anxiety and strategies for staying calm under pressure
- How testing systems differ around the world
This session is perfect for practising expressing opinions and discussing educational experiences.
Week 2:ย What is Your Favourite Film?
Tuesday & Thursday: September 8 & 10
Cinema is a universal language… but what movies leave a lasting impact on us?
Weโll discuss:
- How watching movies helps with language learning
- Streaming platforms vs. going to the cinema
- Film genres you love (and ones you avoid)
A relaxed and highly conversational topic thatโs great for storytelling and recommendation language.
Week 3: Would You Make a Good Spy?
Tuesday & Thursday: September 15 & 17
This week, we take a fun and imaginative look into the secret world of espionage.
- The skills and personality traits needed to be a spy
- Famous real-world spy stories and fictional secret agents
- How technology has changed modern surveillance
We’ll practice creative storytelling, hypothetical language (conditionals), and playful group discussion.
Week 4: What is Your Mindset?
Tuesday & Thursday: September 22 & 24
We finish September with a personal development topic focused on how we think and approach challenges.
- Growth mindset vs. fixed mindset
- How our mindset affects language learning and goal setting
- Overcoming self-doubt and fear of making mistakes
This session is ideal for reflecting on personal growth.
