What is the Thinking in English Film Club?
The Film Club is a great opportunity for Thinking in English Patreon members to practice their conversational English by discussing a film with other members.
Members meet every week on Wednesdays at 6pm UK Time to discuss Films and TV. Most weeks there is no specific topic and you do not have to watch or prepare anything before joining. It’s just a free chat about films!
However at the end of each month we have a special Film Club: Premiere where we discuss one specific film. Earlier in the month, members have voted for what film they want to discuss and just like in the normal Conversation Clubs we will provide 10 questions about the film to help to inspire you.
You can find these (and some other useful resources) below…
For our next Film Club: Premiere on Wednesday 27th November, we will be discussing The Butterfly Effect (2004). This film is an exploration of one (often ignored) aspect of time travel: if you made one small change in the past, would it have bigger, unexpected consequences?

What is The Butterfly Effect
Here is a movie description for The Butterfly Effect
The Butterfly Effect (2004) is a sci-fi thriller starring Ashton Kutcher that explores how small actions can lead to significant consequences. It is an example of what I like to call a “thought experiment” film.
The story follows Evan, a young man with the ability to travel back in time by reading his old journals. He uses this power to try to fix traumatic events from his past, but each change creates new problems in the present, leading to unforeseen and often tragic outcomes.
The film examines themes like fate, free will, and the unintended consequences of our choices. The film is often praised for its ambitious concept and emotional intensity. However, it received mixed reviews for its tone, complex narrative and questionable dialogue and acting!

Film review from The Guardian
This film review by Peter Bradshaw argues that The Butterfly Effect deserves better reviews than it has (or had at the time of writing – 2009).
I believe that Bradshaw has been proven right. The film has a better reputation now (in 2024) than it did back then!
