What is Peter’s Film Club?

The Film Club is a great opportunity to practice English speaking skills by talking about a film.

Peter invites Thinking In English Conversation Club members (Patreon levels: Learner and Master) to join him on Zoom one Saturday per month, for free!

If you are not a Patreon member, you can pay to join the film club on Peter’s website

But it’s not just about improving speaking skills. Every film has a different topic so talking about them is a really effective way to increase your vocabulary.

Also, you can practice your writing. After every meeting, you can write your thoughts about the film and Peter will read it amd give you detailed feedback!

How to Prepare the Film Club:

2. Prepare by studying the Film Language Document.

(The Film Language Document contains 10 Themes, and 30 Vocabulary Items specific to the film. It also contains the 10 conversation questions we will discuss in the meeting!)

Louis Theroux: Inside The Manosphere (2026)

Here is a simple description of the film

This documentary is about a particular corner of internet content and culture. It might be quite shocking and it contains some pretty extreme misogyny, anti-semitism, homophobia, sexual content, and violent behaviour.

This documentary follows 4 or 5 very popular social media influencers. They talk about how to be a real man and their content is full of surprising and often very controversial views about women, sexuality, family, and conspiracy theories.

Their audience is mostly teenage boys. The subjects of this documentary are probably known by every single teenage boy in the UK but their parents have probably never heard of them! You can be sure there are equivalents in your country.

I, Peter, am a 29 year old man who spends a pretty normal amount of time online (that’s quite a lot). however, even I had only ever heard of one person mentioned in the documentary. The internet is surprisingly good at keeping us contained in our specific box. There is a lot we never see!

Parents will be very curious to understand what their sons are seeing. Even if your teenage son doesn’t like this stuff, he’s definitely well aware it! Are you?

Louis Theroux is a very famous and successful British documentary filmmaker (previously for the BBC). In this film, he meets and spends time with some of these influencers and tries to understand this online world, commonly referred to as The Manosphere

  1. Do you have any opinions about the root causes of this culture?
Perhaps: a lack of male role models, harmful social media algorithms, a polarised political culture, an increase in mental health problems in young people…
  1. Do you think Louis Theroux’s approach and tone was too confrontational, too friendly and not critical enough, or a good balance of the two?
