Have you ever heard of a war where the enemy… was a bird? And not just any bird… emus.
Today, we’re going to talk about one of the strangest conflicts in history: the Emu War.
In 1932, the Australian government sent soldiers armed with machine guns to Western Australia to fight a growing emu problem. What followed was a bizarre and almost unbelievable series of events, where highly trained soldiers struggled to defeat thousands of large, flightless birds.
Spoiler alert: the emus won.
So why did this happen? Why were emus seen as such a serious threat? And what can we learn from this strange moment in history?
In this episode of Thinking in English, we’ll explore the background of the Emu War, break down the key vocabulary, and discuss why it’s still remembered, and laughed about, today.
