The Thursday Murder Club (2025)
Here is a simple description of the film
The Thursday Murder Club is a fun, multi-layered, Netflix Original mystery film. It is based on a very popular 2020 book written by a British TV star called Richard Osman. It tells the story of a group of highly capable retirees who, despite being constantly underestimated, become involved in solving a local murder.
The film deals with themes such as crime and murder, ageing and dementia, friendship and family, and defying appearances. It is fun, light, easy to watch, and at times funny but hides some very real, very relatable, serious ideas.
It has attracted a lot of viewers since its release in August 2025, due to its cast. The film stars Helen Mirren (The Queen), Pierce Brosnan (James Bond), Ben Kingsley (Gandhi), and David Tennant (Doctor Who) to name just a few!
Conversation Questions!
- Did you enjoy The Thursday Murder Club? Can you give a one sentence review?
- Talk a little bit about one character you found interesting…
Their strenghts, weaknesses, what motivates them, and the acting performance.
- Recall one moment you find particularly memorable (perhaps it was funny, moving, or surprising).
- Why do you think the characters are so fascinated by unsolved murders? Is it just out of boredom, curiosity, a sense of justice, or something deeper?
- Is this an empowering portrayal of retirees who people often underestimate? Or is it a bit condescending to make a film with this obvious message?
- What did you think of the police? Is it a criticism of well-meaning but underfunded public services? Is Donna actually a capable officer or are the main characters just taking advantage of her?
- What do you think about the character of Bogdan? Did you find his character arc satisfying or frustrating? Does it relate to real-world exploitation of migrant workers?
- In the film, Ian Ventham is trying to sell the home to make money. This would dehouse the residents including many who are unable to move (such as Penny). Do you think it’s unethical for these kinds of public welfare services to be run for profit?
- Talk a little about the importance of mental acuity and memory in the film and it’s portrayal of dementia. What did you make of the character of Stephen?
- Finally, do you think this film was a good mystery? Were the twists satisfying? Do you think there were enough clues? Did you guess anything correctly before it was revealed?
Do you have any more thoughts or questions?
Why not prepare 1 or 2 more of your own questions or opinions about the film?!
