Last year, Netflix announced a massive $72 billion deal to buy Warner Bros Discovery, the company behind Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Looney Tunes, and many of the world’s most famous films and TV shows.
If the agreement is approved, Netflix would control an even larger share of global entertainment than it already does.
Soon after the announcement, US President Donald Trump commented that the deal “could be a problem,” suggesting that Netflix might become too powerful. In other words, the government may need to step in and decide whether one company should be allowed to grow this big.
This raises an important question: Should governments stop companies from becoming too large and too powerful?
In today’s episode, I want to explore the world of monopolies, the history of anti-competition laws, and the debate over whether big companies help consumers or harm them.
