Maestro (2023)
Here is a simple description of the film
Maestro is a 2023 Netflix film directed by Bradley Cooper. It tells the story of Leonard Bernstein, one of America’s most famous musical composers and conductors, and his long relationship with Felicia Montealegre, an actress.
The film is not only about Bernstein’s music career but also about his private life — his love, his struggles, and the choices he made. We see how his ambition and fame brought him success but also created problems in his marriage and family. The movie shows both the beautiful and heartbreaking moments of their partnership, including joy, trust, adultery, and illness. Of course music plays an important role, helping to express emotions that words cannot.
With strong performances by Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, Maestro is a film about love, art, and identity. You’ll probably enjoy it if you like films about the lives of famous artists, complex relationships, and the emotional power of music.
Conversation Questions!
- What did you think of the film and how does it compare to other biopics you have seen?
- The film portrays Bernstein as both admirable and deeply flawed. What was your opinion of him by the end of the film? Do you respect his decisions?
- Recall one scene in particular that you found memorable or moving.
- How is Felicia’s perspective represented and what does it add to the story? Is she just presented as the wife of a great man?
- Reviews of this film often praise the two central acting performances (Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan). Were you impressed by the performances? Was one better than the other?
- How well do you think the film uses the music to help tell the story and communicate emotions?
- Did you like the way the film used black and white scenes? What did it communicate?
- Is it possible to balance ambition and legacy with family responsibility?
- What did you think about the film’s portrayal of Bernstein’s sexuality? Is it nuanced? Does it encourage us to morally judge him for his promiscuity? Does it excuse him?
- Do Leonard and Felicia have a successful marriage? What does it mean to have a successful partnership that lasts and changes over decades of life?
