What is Peter’s Film Club?
The Film Club is a great opportunity to practice English speaking skills by talking about a film.
Peter invites Thinking In English Conversation Club members (Patreon levels: Learner and Master) to join him on Zoom one Saturday per month, for free!
If you are not a Patreon member, you can pay to join the film club on Peter’s website
But it’s not just about improving speaking skills. Every film has a different topic so talking about them is a really effective way to increase your vocabulary.
Also, you can practice your writing. After every meeting, you can write your thoughts about the film and Peter will read it amd give you detailed feedback!
How to Prepare the Film Club:
1. Watch the film!
2. Prepare by studying the Film Language Document.
(The Film Language Document contains Themes, and Vocabulary Items specific to the film. It also contains the Conversation Questions we will discuss in the meeting!)

One Flew Over The Pieces Of A Woman (2020)
Here is a simple description of the film
Pieces Of A Woman is an extremely intimate and personal film following a couple dealing with grief following a family tragedy. Vanessa Kirby plays Martha and her intense and yet quiet acting performance carries the film and makes it truly memorable.
This is not an easy watch, it’s definitely not a film you’ll be smiling through. However, the realistic, unglamourous and exceptionally honest portrayal of normal people reacting to a tragedy make it a really worthwhile experience.
The film contains an incredibly viceral, memorable, and difficult-to-watch opening scene which was filmed in a single 25-minute take. From there we focus on quiet suffering, strained family relationships, coping mechanisms, and different attempts to heal and move on.
Conversation Questions!
- How did the film make you feel? Would you recommend it to others and would you watch it again?
- Let’s talk about the birth in the first scene. It’s a 25-minute single-shot. What did you think of this scene, how well does it set up the rest of the film, and how does it compare to other childbirth scenes you’ve seen in other films?
- How did you feel about Martha as a character and the way she dealt with her grief? Did you sympathise with her? Did any of her decisions confuse you?
- What did you think of the character of Sean? How much did you sympathise with his actions? Do you think the film spent too much or too little time following his point of view?
- What did you think of Martha’s mother and her involvement in the aftermath of the tragedy? Did your opinion of her change when you learned the story of her infancy and her mother’s struggle?
- Do you think that it was right for the family to sue the midwife? How important is it that there are legal consequences for people who make mistakes at work that lead to tragedy?
- Talk a little bit about the motifs of the bridge and apples. How successful do you think they were at making the film’s emotional messages clearer and more poignant?
- In the end, the film has 3 distinct conclusion scenes:
– Martha’s speech in court
– Martha on the bridge with Sean’s hat and the urn
– ‘Lucianna’ climbing the apple tree
How do they all demonstrate closure for Marta and the film as a whole? And was it a satisfying ending for you?
