This week the ‘Thinking in English’ Community is talking about apps, websites, and online services!

We want to discuss our experiences, both good and bad, of using online services. What are some apps you can’t live without? What are some websites that used to be great, but are now frustrating? Let’s practice our English while talking about this topic!

Here are 10 conversation questions to help you get started!

The Thinking in English Conversation Club takes place every TUESDAY at 12pm, 6pm, and 9pm, and THURSDAY at 12pm and 6pm UK time!

Conversation Questions: Online Services!

  1. What online apps or websites do you use the most?
  2. Have you noticed any of your favourite apps or websites changing over time? What changed?
  3. Is there an app or website that you stopped using because it got worse?
  4. How do you feel when you see a lot of ads on a website or app?
  5. What are some things you like or don’t like about social media (like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok)?
  6. Have you ever had a bad experience with an online service, like a streaming service or shopping app?
  7. Do you pay for any online services, like Netflix or Spotify? Do you think it’s worth the cost?
  8. If you could improve one of your favourite apps or websites, what would you change?
  9. Do you think companies care more about making money or keeping users happy?
Vocabulary
  • App (Noun):
    • A software application, especially one that you download and use on a mobile device like a phone or tablet.
  • Ad (Noun):
    • Short for “advertisement,” a message on a platform promoting products, services, or events
  • Social Media (Noun):
    • Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok that allow users to create and share content and interact with others online.
  • Streaming Service (Noun):
    • An online service that lets users watch or listen to content (such as movies, shows, or music) in real-time without downloading it (e.g., Netflix or Spotify).
  • Cost (Noun):
    • The amount of money needed to pay for something.
  • Improve (Verb):
    • To make something better.
  • Company (Noun):
    • An organization or business that produces goods or provides services.
  • User (Noun):
    • A person who regularly uses a particular service, app, or website.

To help you prepare for the Thinking in English conversation club this week, I have created vocabulary lists and some model answers.

The model answers are split into intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced level responses. Hopefully this will give you an idea on the differences in quality between intermediate and advanced response, and perhaps inspire your own answers to these questions!
