What is a banana republic?
I’m curious how many of you have heard this phrase before. If you just take the words as they are, it almost sounds funny. Bananas are a harmless fruit… and depending on your interests you have heard of the clothing brand “Banana Republic” before.
In this episode, though, I want to look at the original meaning of “banana republic.” It is connected to politics, foreign influence in politics, powerful international corporations, and the history of Central America.
In fact, the term “banana republic” first appeared during a period when large American companies controlled huge parts of the economies of several countries in the region. These were fruit companies, that also built railways, controlled ports, and influenced governments.
We’re going to explore what the phrase “banana republic” really means and where the phrase originally came from. We’ll look into the role of American fruit companies, including the infamous United Fruit Company. And we’ll end by discussing whether “banana republic” still a useful term today, or is it an outdated way of describing complex political and economic systems?
