At what age do you imagine stopping work? Do you think people will still retire in their 60s in the future?
For some people, retirement feels like a clear finish line. It is a time to stop working, relax, and enjoy time the way you want. In fact, quite a few Thinking in English Patreon members are retired and spending their time studying English!
For other people though, retirement can feel distant, confusing, or unrealistic. And a lot of that depends on where you live, which generation you belong to, and the kind of work you do. A desk job in one country can lead to a very different future from a physical job in another.
For our grandparents, retirement was often something to look forward to. You worked hard for decades, and then, at a certain age, you stopped. There was a pension, security, and time to rest.
For many people today, though, retirement feels uncertain or impossible. Living costs are rising, pensions are changing, and the idea of stopping work completely is starting to feel like a luxury.
In today’s episode, we’re going to explore what retirement really means and ask whether stopping work in your 50s or 60s still makes sense in the modern world. At the same time, we’ll practise a whole variety of English time prepositions!
