I’m sure for many of you listening, a lot of your language learning happens through traditional methods. You probably study vocabulary, practise grammar, attend classes, and speak with teachers or other learners.
Language learning can also happen through entertainment. For example, watching Netflix in English can give you exposure to more English conversations. Or playing an English-language video game can expose you to English dialogue and everyday expressions.
There is growing research into whether this kind of entertainment can support language learning. This episode is inspired by two articles I recently read from The Conversation that explored the potential of films, television, and video games as language-learning tools.
Today, we’re going to look at three main areas. First, films and television, and what they can teach us about natural English. Second, video games, and how they can provide motivation, communication, and social interaction. And finally, how to use films, TV, and video games effectively so that entertainment becomes a useful part of your English-learning routine without ruining your free time.
