What is the Thinking in English Film Club?

The Film Club is a great opportunity for Thinking in English Patreon members to practice their conversational English by discussing a film with other members.

In each session we will talk about one film, please try to watch it before attending! Just like in the normal Conversation Clubs we will provide 10 questions about the film to help to inspire you.

For our next meeting on Wednesday 24th April, we will be discussing a Never Let Me Go, a poignant and thought-provoking romance based on a novel written by Nobel Prize winning author Kazuo Ishiguro and adapted for the screen by Alex Garland.

What is Never Let Me Go?

Here is a movie description for Never Let Me Go!

“Never Let Me Go” was originally written as a novel Kazuo Ishiguro, adapted by the brilliant screenwriter/filmaker Alex Garland and directed by Mark Romanek.

The film follows the lives of Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Andrew Garfield), and Ruth (Keira Knightley), who attend a peculiar boarding school.

As they mature, they uncover some dark truths about the reason for their existence. They struggle with their fate while developing complex relationships and confronting the ethics of their society.

It’s a thought-provoking exploration of identity, love, and mortality.

  1. Do you think the characters had any control over their destinies in the movie?
  1. Did the ending of the film leave you satisfied, or did you want more closure?
  1. What parallels, if any, do you see between the world of “Never Let Me Go” and our own society?
  1. What do you think about the concept of _[I’ll reveal this before film club – I don’t want to spoil the film here!]_?

And finally, how would you describe the film to someone who has never seen it before? Would you recommend it? Why?
