Recently I released a bonus episode on Foods with Misleading and Confusing English Names which looked at dishes like Welsh Rabbit (which included no Rabbit) and Sweetbreads (which are not sweet and not bread).

In researching that episode, I realised that there are a lot of foods, dishes, and beverages named after places. The English Breakfast, for example, is named after England. Or the Manhattan Cocktail was apparently invented at the Manhattan Club in New York City.

However, there are so many examples of dishes named after the wrong place or the wrong thing. I find these things so interesting. Names are powerful – if you label something with a place name it creates an image and emotional connection.

Let’s take a look at some examples of foods, drinks, and dishes named after the wrong place!
