What is the Thinking in English Film Club?

The Film Club is a great opportunity for Thinking in English Patreon members to practice their conversational English by discussing a film with other members.

Members meet every week on Wednesdays at 6pm UK Time to discuss Films and TV. Most weeks there is no specific topic and you do not have to watch or prepare anything before joining. It’s just a free chat about films!

However at the end of each month we have a special Film Club: Premiere where we discuss one specific film. Earlier in the month, members have voted for what film they want to discuss and just like in the normal Conversation Clubs we will provide 10 questions about the film to help to inspire you.

You can find these (and some other useful resources) below…

For our next Film Club: Premiere on Wednesday 21st May, we will be discussing Anora (2024), a dark, yet vibrant alternative love story between a New York stripper and the young son of a Russian Oligarch. This film became very famous because it won many awards… including the 2025 Oscars for the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Leading Actress!

Anora (2024)

What is Anora?

Here is a movie description for Anora

This year’s Oscar winner is about Anora, a young stripper living in Brooklyn. She meets Vanya, the son of a wealthy Russian businessman, and they begin an unexpected romance. After spending a week together, they impulsively get married in Las Vegas.

Their happiness is short-lived. Vanya’s powerful family arrives to break up the relationship, forcing Anora to fight for her future and her independence.

This film explores the clash between personal freedom and family control, as well as the illusions of wealth and love. It asks whether true connection can survive when people come from completely different worlds—and when money is always part of the story.

Join us for the Film Club Premiere on 21st May to share your thoughts!
